ALTHO THE GARDEN WAS STILL HELD IN WINTER'S GRIP,IT WAS A MILD GRIP... IT WAS NOT WINTERY-COLD DOWN-SOUTH, AND NADO HAD SET-TO WITH A PURPOSE, OUT BACK, WITH SECATEURS AND BOW-SAW, FOR ODD DAYS TOWARDS THE END OF JANUARY, MAKING-DO WITH HIS LATE FATHER'S GLOVES, AS PROTECTION FROM THORN, BRAMBLE AND NETTLE...THERE WAS MUCH WORK TO BE DONE...
...UNFORTUNATELY, AND INCREASINGLY SO, THE GLOVES WERE OF LITTLE PROTECTION. HOLES ABOUNDED AND THE CHAMOIS LEATHER HAD HARDENED AND WAS INFLEXIBLE. HIS FINGERS BORE MANY CUTS AND PRICKS THAT STUNG FOR QUITE A WHILE. AND BESIDES, THEY WERE TOO BIG! SO, NADO TRIED-ON HIS LATE MOTHER'S GLOVES...
...BUT PRETTY AS THEY WERE, THEY WERE TOO SMALL!! [DEAR READER, THIS SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE THE "PATTERN" OF GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS...APOLOGIES! BUT I WILL CONTINUE...]...SO, NADO TRIED ANOTHER PAIR OF HIS MOTHER'S GARDENING GLOVES...
...BUT THEY WERE UNCOMFORTABLY SOFT, AND DID NOT FEEL AT ALL RIGHT FOR THE GARDEN JOBS IN-HAND!!!
SO,ON THE THRESHOLD OF OPENING HIS ACCOUNT FOR HIS SIXTY-EIGHTH YEAR, NADO CAUGHT A BUS, THE NUMBER THREE, INTO TOWN, FOR THE SECOND TIME THAT DAY, TO BUY HIMSELF HIS OWN PAIR OF GARDENING GLOVES!
NADO HAD NEVER HAD HIS OWN PAIR BEFORE! DESPITE HIS ADVANCED YEARS, HE WAS VERY EXCITED! NOW, MAYBE HE COULD BELIEVE THAT HE WAS GONNA BE A REAL GARDENER....MORE MONTY DON THAN GERTRUDE JEKYLL, ADMITTED!
HE ALREADY K(N)EW THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO GROW HEIRLOOM AND PERRENIAL PLANTS AND VEGETABLES...SOMETHING SUSTAINABLE... MAYBE,EVEN SOME LONGED-FOR GOLDEN GOJI BERRY BUSHES!

Great story and happy birthday dear Nado! I think everyone who gardens to any extent at all recognizes the gloves problem! Almost as bad as the odd socks one! By the way, who is Monty Don?
ReplyDeleteMany thanx, Kris...yes, Dad's gloves are VERY old...i felt with my enthusiasm for gardening growing apace, i would treat myself to my very own pair...my first pair, ever!?
ReplyDeleteMONTY DON, is a genial, gardener with programmes on the BBC. I think he also did a series called AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 GARDENS......and he presents gardening progs from his own home etc. Of course, I do not have facility to watch these last four years....there are books, tho...
